Design Decisions and Dilemmas -Master Bath Remodel -One Room Challenge Week 2
As we last left the room it was in total, I mean really total destruction. There were giant holes in the floor, dust EVERYWHERE, walls removed and doors gone.
The design is a take on the modern farmhouse style. And no I did not select this because it is such a current trend. One of my design philosophies is that the inside of the home should reflect the style of the outside. There is something really jarring to me if you drive up to a very traditional home and inside you find ultra contemporary everywhere. Now don’t get me wrong I am not a purist by any means that thinks you must be stuck with the style outside, I just think they need to relate to each other. This is the exterior of my lake house. It was built in 1997 and as you can see it is a very traditional farmhouse style elevation complete with wrap around porch and wood siding ( well hardiplank but you know what I mean)
I wanted to create bright space with some fun details. I opted for a small hex tile flooring in a somewhat modern custom design. The hex tile is such a classic for bathrooms, it seems it has been used since indoor plumbing was introduced. A white oak vanity (mine is being made locally but this one is similar) that lets the natural beauty of the wood shine will add some warmth and texture to the space. The walls and trim will be painted Sherwin Williams Pure White which pairs perfectly with the matte elongated subway tile from Floor and Décor. I am going to have it laid in a vertical pattern to add a more modern touch. The shower niche will be a long horizontal with these glass hex tiles from The Tile Shop which goes so well with Sherwin Williams Aqua sphere that we have on the barn door into the bathroom. I love taking a bath, I mean seriously love it, it’s one of my happy places so I am splurging on this tub from Bain Ultra. I was really torn between black hardware or gold tone ones. I had a really hard time finding a tub filler, vanity faucets and shower components in a line that was in the gold families. Every plumbing line has such a different take on the goldish fixtures that it is impossible to mix across lines. The matte black finish won out simply because of the choices that were available. I have always been a big fan of Kohler especially the purist line so I started there.
I found this really fun light fixture on Etsy and just had to add it to the space for a bit of fun. It is wood that has been bent and stained.
I decided to update some bath sconces I had removed from a previous home because the finish was not good and am going to try having them powder coated the blue color. (Let’s hope this little experiment turns out well) Stay tuned for more about this project.(Spoiler alert they are in the flatlay on this post!)
We have already run into a few dilemmas. One of the first was apparent as soon as we demo’d the bathroom. One of my goals was to expand the shower to 4’ wide. I did not want a bench or a pony wall just a fully glassed in shower. But alas when we demo’d the pony wall we discovered some interesting plumbing that cannot be moved. I decided to add a bench so that at least it will feel much larger. I really wanted to create a fully enclosed water closet because…. , well we all know why. I tried and tried to make it work but there just isn’t enough space to create a wall and door without making the entire bathroom feel cramped and closed in or incurring a major expense of moving the toilet. The powder room is directly behind and the door to the bedroom is to the left. So the toilet will be hanging out with rest of the bathroom.
